Volunteers play an integral part of our organization's efforts to provide practical help and hope to homeless, hungry and hurting people in the Hamilton community. All of the offsite opportunities below are available to any age group and can be a great way to fit volunteer service into a busy schedule.
Group Opportunities
Group opportunities are occasionally available. For further information, please contact our volunteer administrator at volunteer@mission-services.com or call 905-528-4211 x106.
Offsite Volunteer Opportunities
These are great opportunities for families, neighbourhoods, employee groups and church groups.
- Organize a neighbourhood food drive. Non-perishable food items like canned tuna, beans, pasta/tomato sauces, vegetables are always needed along with pasta, peanut butter, coffee, tea, juice, baby food, formula, diapers and other paper products - facial tissue, toilet tissue and paper towels. Contact Community Services Opportunity Centre at 905-528-5100 or contact communityservices@mission-services.com for more information.
- Organize a needs drive for women and children at Inasmuch House that might include children's healthy lunch items, juice drinking boxes, children's storybooks in other languages, larger size disposable diapers and pull-ups, toiletries for women, children and teen girls consisting of hair products, deodorant, and make up (lipstick, foundations, small 1 to 4 colour eye-shadow containers, blush sticks or powder, mascara, etc.) and non-perishable food items. Call Inasmuch House at 905-529-8149 or email inasmuch@mission-services.com regarding drop off donation time and instructions.
- Collect men's toiletries. Our Men's and Addiction Services located at 325 James Street North are always in need of men's toiletries - razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo. Call 905-528-7635 for details or email mensservices@mission-services.com. As this is a 24/7 facility, drop offs can be done even over a weekend or in an evening.
Who do you turn to when someone you love is struggling with addictions and you feel like your life is falling apart?
Kathryn came to the mission terrified and angry, feeling alone and without hope. She could think of nothing to do that would help her son. Jason was struggling with addiction and mental health issues, and Kathryn did not know where to turn.
Mission Servies Opportunity Centres has received positive feedback from the community regarding our decision to commission a report from the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton on Homeless Women in Hamilton
Not to Be Forgotten: Homeless Women in Hamilton is accessible HERE.
I encourage you to read the report and share it with your friends. Any comments or observations about the report are appreciated.
